This woman. This concept. Joanna Waterfall, creator of The Yellow Conference and The Yellow Room! #bloomyellow
I’m one of those people that when I’m blown away by something, I feel compelled to share it with the world. I have pretty much always been this way. Passion is just a way of life for me. Passion is also the JIVA way! To top it off, the Yellow Conference is also centered around creative women, and JIVA is all about that too! We believe in women empowering women, which is why we are sponsoring the #EMPOWEREDBYHER Instagram Challenge from August 15-25, check it out!
For these reasons, I have to tell you about Joanna and her creation. Her concept is really two parts working as one. The Yellow Conference and The Yellow Room.
According to their website, The Yellow Conference, which is an annual conference held once a year in LA with tons of inspiring speakers, “is a gathering for creative women who desire to ignite passion and bring goodness to the world through everyday living. This conference was created for you. The women who know that they were built for a greater purpose. The earth shakers and ground movers. Come learn from like-minded individuals who are out there making a difference, and learn how you too can do the same. Come to get inspired and leave with practical advice on how to make your dreams a reality as a woman living in today’s modern world.”
They actually ran an ambitious Kickstarters campaign a couple of months ago to get the site off the ground sooner, but unfortunately it did not come to fruition, despite raising a commendable amount of donations; however, Joanna sent out the most honest and beautiful blog post to all of the backers and posted it on the site too. It was all about not being afraid to fail BIG if you want to be GREAT. They even had a #FREETOFAIL party to honor their praiseworthy efforts. Read here.
So be sure to keep in touch with them on social media or via their newsletter so you can be there when this magic happens!! Or if you’re lucky enough, check them out in LA at the big conference! The next conference is August 27th and 28th register here! You can also stream the conference at a discounted rate if you cannot be there live click here
What is the first thing you do in the morning when you wake up that helps kick-start your day on the right track?
I have to be honest- I’m HORRIBLE in the mornings. The really only consistent thing I do in the mornings is drink my coffee. I can’t go far without it! Mornings are a work in progress for me. On a good day, I read, eat a good breakfast and spend some time in prayer before heading off to my office. But I can’t say it’s a consistent thing!
Do you have a go-to Motivational Mantra?
I love the quote “Don’t ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive, because the world needs people who have come alive.” -Howard Thurman
Kicking-ass in your field of expertise can sometimes be a lot of work, how do you stay connected to your center on those inevitable tough days?
Great question. It’s really a mental game for me. I have to remember to disconnect, stop comparing myself, and to remember what really matters in life. I know it may sound strange, but often times I imagine the end of my life, when I’m laying on my death bed. I wonder what I will look back on and what will matter to me on that day, and to focus on those things. I try and remember that life is short, we’re all just trying to figure it out, and we must live a life of gratitude, focusing on relationships and love.
What are your MUST HAVES in your carry-on when you're about to leave town on a big jet plane?
A good book, journal and a pen. And a few snacks of course :)
What is your favorite thing to do when you need some creative inspiration?
I like to get away. Travel, go to a coffee shop I’ve never been before, or talk to interesting people who don’t think the same as me. I find getting out of your routine and the norm always sparks inspiration.
What’s your best piece of advice for our younger generation when it comes to following your passion?
Remember whatever you are following will feel like work at times and you won’t always love it. It’s just a fact of life. Bare through the hard times, don’t give up, and keep persisting, even when you don’t feel like it. Also, no more comparison! You’re awesome and you don’t have to be like that celebrity you see on the magazine.
Favorite yoga pose for chillen’ out?
I love happy baby pose! It’s normally at the end of the yoga session, after your body is all warm and needing that last stretch. Bliss.
What’s the most recent inspirational book that you’ve read?
I just read “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years” by Donald Miller. It’s about living a story worth telling with your life. So good!
Do you have a nightly ritual that helps clear your mind for a restful sleep, creating a productive day to follow?
I also wish I was better at this. To be honest, I’m normally on my phone right before I go to sleep. I’m sure this isn’t good for my stress levels or my brain! But on a good night I’ll talk with my husband, we’ll reflect on the day and end the night cuddling in bed. Talking with my man always relaxes me, as he has a calming presence and great perspective on life.
